Data Modeling
I’m currently an analytics engineer building SSA’s first network wide business intelligence platform. In the past, I’ve worked as a software technical product manager, chemist, and data analyst. I have researched and delivered mathematical optimizations and automation to container terminals for over a decade and continue to refine and apply metrics for container terminals today.
I’m also a student of history.
I also play tabletop role playing games.
I’ve also recently completed a 6-month job search and have compiled some advice and some statistics and made them available here.

TIDEWORKS TECHNOLOGY, Seattle, WA November 2009 to January 2023
Tideworks Technology is a subsidiary of Carrix and sister company to SSA.
Principal Consultant (March 2022 to January 2023)
The position was a mixture of working with container terminals on their operations and how those operations could be supported with our software; advising the executives of the companies on any topic of their concern; and customer-facing presentations.
Product management for a company-wide data layer.
Led a container terminal client to partner with a third-party payment platform to expedite fee payments, quickly modernizing their process, expediting over $10K in fees per month, and reducing the local labor costs for processing fees to $0.
Advised container terminal staff on business processes to improve the performance of operations and how to use the Tideworks software to its fullest, especially for the Tideworks data platform product, Insight, and the mobile dispatch product, Traffic Control.
Gathered requirements for software changes to Insight and Traffic Control and other products.
Researched and advised Tideworks, Carrix, and SSA executives on new technologies and developments in the news: Starlink’s Maritime service, the use of polarities to guide strategic business decisions, the industrial internet of things, machine learning, and blockchain.
Clear, concise presentation of mathematical optimizations and other complex topics, including at the Tideworks Customer Conferences in 2010, 2013, 2016, and 2019.
Advised on regulatory issues (Ocean Shipping Reform Act) concerning supply chain congestion.
Senior Operations Research Analyst (August 2016 to March 2022)
Product management for optimization features. Gathered requirements for automated terminal truck tracking, dispatching, and optimization features for container terminals.
Researched emerging technologies such as the potential courses for the pandemic, internet of things, electric vehicles, deep learning, reinforcement learning, quantum computing, and cryptocurrency.
Professional Services Senior Business Analyst (August 2013 to August 2016)
Product management for optimization features. Gathered requirements and designed automation for Stevedoring Services of America's (SSA) first installation of automatic stacking cranes.
Gathered requirements and developed (F#) a prototype solution for berth optimization for a container terminal that throughputs 2M TEU per year.
Senior Business Analyst (November 2009 to August 2013)
Product management for optimization features and the mobile dispatching application, Traffic Control. Gathered requirements and designed automation for CSX's rail cargo sorting hub in Ohio.
Product management for Terminal View, an interactive, near real-time application presenting equipment positions and operations information in a 3-D virtual environment.
Accomplishments (November 2009 to January 2023)
Designed the operations, optimizations, and automations for the CSX rail terminal in Northwest Ohio and additional CSX terminals. Led the successful delivery after which Tideworks acquired the entire CSX network as customers, over 30 terminals, and became the industry leader as the primary supplier of rail container terminal operating systems.
Designed the operations, optimizations, and automations for six automatic stacking cranes (ASCs) at Manzanillo International Terminal in Panama, the first large scale semi-automation project in SSA’s long history. The ASCs have no operator on board and have been successful. They are the fastest yard cranes on the terminal and have exceeded their initial purpose of handling the gate traffic and taken on a portion of the vessel cargo movements. Led the successful delivery. Also wrote the interface between Traffic Control and ABB’s system, and helped develop the optimization algorithm.
Researched the proposed operations and assisted the staff at Jacksonville Container Terminal in Florida in making the best decision regarding upgrading and enlarging their facility for future business saving them $250K.
Led the team to provide optimized dispatching to terminal trucks for a 2M TEU throughput terminal in Panama. The project delivered 10% savings on the costs of operating the terminal’s fleet.
Partnered with a third-party vendor that trained a model to predict container dwell time. Wrote scripts to validate a year of container movement data. A successful model was trained and led to a project to install SSA's first machine learning features at SSA Mexico, a 2M TEU throughput terminal.
Participated in a change lab project with several peers at Tideworks and focused on how power could be better shared at the company. Dozens of interviews were conducted. Mapped the information from the interviews, depicting feedback cycles of interpersonal interactions that suggested how small, sustained changes in key places could have large impacts on the corporate culture.
